How to "Blend In" as an Expat

There are rules expats should always follow, no matter where they’re from and where they now live. Those rules are simple and basic but so very important. Think about the foreigners that live in your own town or city and ask yourself what you expect of them.

1) Be sure to learn the language
2) Always respect the native culture(s)
3) Don't criticize ( if you don’t like it, then leave!)
4) Work on adapting (you don’t have to forget your own culture, but there are times when you must adjust or compromise. An example for me: I live in a small town where women are very modest , so I dress and wear makeup modestly.

5) Be open minded whether it is cuisine, traditions etc.
6) Know the laws and respect them
7) Be conscious of how you portray yourself

Now, you can be yourself (kind of!)

As an expat you will stand out. Remember, you will be a target for gossip and may stir disapproval, or in the least, suspicion. So, put your best "you" forward (don't forget there is no second chance to make a “first impression”). If you make a mistake early on, it can be hard to bounce back and win people's trust. Begin your new life slowly, be reserved, listen and observe more than speak. This will help you understand the people and their culture, and will help you keep an open mind.

I reckon being an expat in Europe is far easier than being an expat in Asia. China particularly. Take yesterday when I was walking in a park carrying a large bag of rolls and a container filled with meat, and some random ugly guy started walking next to me, put his arm around my shoulder and squeezed my breast while his wife was walking backwards ahead of me taking photos of her disgusting spouse!

Wow! Well, these things aren't unheard of in Italy, either, unfortunately. Here they like to grab the rear more, and there are plenty of whistles and wolf calls. If you are blonde (like me), it is impossible not to attract attention.

Yeah, that I can deal with but here in China, they will go up to your supermarket trolley and start rifling through your stuff to see what you've bought and will hold some items up for their friends to see and laugh.

Yep, that's bad. Here, people sometimes laugh as you pass by and they stare a lot. BUT, they don't touch your stuff. How do you handle something like that? It must be hard to respect these people when they don't respect you or your things.
